The Bach Archive keeps some manuscripts from the possession of the publishing house Breitkopf & Härtel in its inventory. The collection includes copies of Bach's works as well as copies of other works by J.S. Bach. It has been on permanent loan to the Bach Archive since 1953.
Some of the manuscripts came into the possession of the publishing house Breitkopf in the 1750s as a source base for the distribution of copies. They are listed in the Breitkopf catalog of 1761. Not sold at the auction in 1836, they were later added to the Breitkopf & Härtel Archive. There the manuscripts received their signature, under which they can also be found in the »Katalog des Archivs von Breitkopf & Härtel Leipzig« from 1925. After the Second World War, all preserved business documents of the publishing house Breitkopf & Härtel were handed over to the State Archive in Leipzig. The Bach manuscripts were placed on permanent loan to the Bach Archive in 1953.
The collection can also be viewed online at Bach digital, where you will find detailed descriptions of the manuscripts in addition to the digital copies.
