Besides the legendary minstrel contest on castle Wartburg, one was held in Dresden: on the occassion of the marriage of Prince-Elector Friedrich August of Saxony and Archduchess Josepha of Hohenzollern in 1719, the Gods Jupiter, Venus, Mercury, Mars, Saturn and the Sun decend to Dresden. Under the arbitration of the father of the gods, they quarrel about their respective parts in the mathmaking and try to outbid each other with proposals for the festivities. This is – in short – the content of the occasional work which Johann David Heinichen, having recently been appointed as Dresden Court Kapellmeister composed on for the wedding celebration.
