About us

The Leipzig Bach Archive is widely recognized as the world’s pre-eminent centre of Bach scholarship. Comprising a research institute, a library, a museum, and an events department, it occupies the historic Bose House complex at St Thomas's Square, opposite the church where J. S. Bach served as cantor for 27 years. With its unmatched collections and manifold activities the Bach Archive contributes significantly to the time-honoured image of Leipzig as a »city of music« in general and a »Bach city« in particular. The Bach Archive Foundation is a non-profit corporation which receives its basic financial support from the City of Leipzig, the Federal Republic of Germany, and the Free State of Saxony. It is directed by an Executive Board, overseen by a Board of Trustees, and advised by a Board of Curators.

A New President for The Leipzig Bach Archive

Ton Koopman is the new president of the Leipzig Bach Archive. He succeeds John Eliot Gardiner and was appointed to the Board of Trustees for five years. He will already be present as artist and president at the upcoming Leipzig Bach Festival in June.

The history of the Leipzig Bach Archive

The Leipzig Bach Archive was founded on November 20, 1950 to mark the occasion of Johann Sebastian Bach’s 200th death anniversary. The purpose of the Bach Archive was to gather the sources and documents about the life and works of the Cantor of St. Thomas’s, which were strewn all over the city of Leipzig, and to preserve them for the future.

Organisation & Boards

The Leipzig Bach Archive, a non-profit corporation, was founded in 1998. It receives its basic financial support from the City of Leipzig, the Federal Government of Germany, and the Free State of Saxony.
