Blauer Salon

Blauer Salon

Blauer Salon is located in King Albert House, a commercial building that opened on the corner of Markt and Barfussgässchen in 1913, and the name of which alludes to the then king of Saxony. Illustrating the name of the house, the Dresden painter Otto Gussmann painted two wall friezes in the inner courtyard with scenes from the life of King Albert, which have not survived.

King Albert House is a reinforced concrete skeleton construction, the façade of which reflects the transition from Historicism to the Reform style of architecture. The ground floor area and low mezzanine are clad in dark, glazed ceramic – the only such example in Leipzig – while the fourth-floor windows, reminiscent of art nouveau, are flanked by figures. The coats-of-arms of Saxon cities feature along the ledge at the mezzanine level. From Markt, a 71 m passage leads through two white atriums to Barfussgässchen. One striking element in the first and larger of the atriums is a semi-circular portico decorated with green majolica leading to the marble-clad main staircase indoors, and which curves out into the courtyard.

In recent years, the ground floor and basement have been occupied almost exclusively by restaurants and bars that make up a substantial part of the Leipzig bar district, Drallewatsch.
